John Cleese biography

Cleese was born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. Although his father had taken the name Cleese when he entered the Army during World War I because he found the surname humiliating, his family’s surname was formally altered by deed poll in 1923.

Cleese cheered on Somerset County Cricket Club and Bristol City as a young fan. Cleese attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School, where he excelled in cricket and boxing and won an English prize. The school was funded by money his mother acquired.

Cleese excelled academically, passing eight O-Levels and three A-Levels in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. He also played cricket for the First XI.

In his autobiography Thus, Anyway, he claims that when he was 17, learning that his housemaster had not appointed him as a house prefect had a negative impact on his outlook: “It was unfair, so it wasn’t deserving of my respect. I think this experience altered the way I saw the world.”
