One day in February 2019, Higa decided to continue the chat, where she met two men. After some conversation, they suggested that Higa start streaming on Twitch, which she did. Her early streams were mostly singing and chatting with viewers, until one day she brought her juvenile red-tailed hawk in front of the camera. The clip was later posted to the r/LiveStreamFails subreddit and went viral. She gained more attention because her content was very different compared to other streamers due to the lack of falconry and wildlife rehabilitators on the site before. Realizing that she could educate Twitch viewers about wildlife, she focused her content more on her passion. After celebrating her 21st birthday, she garnered media attention by hosting a charity event for the local homeless coalition she had previously volunteered with. The stream grossed $32,000.
Maya later met another streamer, Mizkif, and first spoke to him on Discord. After a few online dates and streaming attempts to assemble her PC, Mizkif invites Maya to fly away and meet up in real life because a fan donated a huge sum of money to Mizkif to make it possible. Although they had no intention of dating, they did strike up a relationship. In July 2019, Higa launched Conservation Cast, a podcast where viewers learn about animals and gather information from experts including conservationists, nature lovers and science communicators.
