A group of Ontario Blacksmiths have found a common cause by supporting the war in Ukraine through forging a work of art. They came together after hearing about an award-winning Ukrainian sculptor who’d put down his anvil to fight against the Russian invasion.

A group of Ontario blacksmiths has come together in a unique way to help a family separated by the war in Ukraine by hand-crafting an artistic metal gate to auction off as a fundraiser.

The nine blacksmiths revealed the gate at the CanIron Festival in Fergus, Ont. in August.

The gate was designed by Irina Tereshchenko, a war refugee who came to Waterloo with her children in December 2022.

Her husband Sergii Skorobohatsky is back home fighting in Ukraine. Before the war, he was a blacksmith and sculptor. His artistic ironwork won an award last year at the prestigious Biennale show in Italy.

The gate is not yet up for auction, but when sold the proceeds will go to help Tereshchenko and her family.
