Tom Brady announces his retirement from the NFL following Gisele Bündchen’s divorce
Tom Brady gives up pigskin – ‘for good’.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback announced in a video that he was retiring posted on social media Wednesday morning and confirmed he would not be returning again.
“I’ll get right to the point.” I’m retiring for good,” he said on camera. “I know the last time this process was pretty serious, so when I woke up this morning I thought I’d just hit record and let you guys know first.”
Brady, 45, quipped that athletes only get “one very emotional retirement essay” and, unfortunately, he “used up” his last year.
“Thank you guys, so much to each and every one of you for supporting me, my family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors,” he continued.
“Thank you guys for making my absolute dream come true. I wouldn’t change anything.”
The athlete announced it exactly one year ago, on February 1, 2022 he would retire after 22 seasons.
“It’s hard for me to write this, but here it is: I’m not going to make this competitive commitment anymore. I’ve loved my NFL career and now it’s time to focus my time and energy on other things that need my attention,” he wrote in a social media post at the time, apparently referring to his marriage to then-wife Gisele Bündchen and his children.
However, just over a month later, Brady retired and returned to the NFLsaying his place was “on the pitch” not “in the stands”.
The reversal seemed to be the last straw in his marriage to the former Victoria’s Secret Angel as Page Six reported exclusively in September 2022 that the couple had an epic battle over the decision.
“There was trouble in the marriage because of his decision to retire. Gisele has always been the one with the kids,” the source said.
“They agreed that he would retire to focus on his family, and then he changed his mind.”
